AMERICA'S NEW TARIFF.
SENATE INCREASES DUTIES. FRUITS AND FRUIT PRODUCTS. (Received 10.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 2. In nearly every case the Senate Tariff Commission has increased the duties on fruits over the House of Representatives' figures. Jellies, jams, and marmalades are quoted at 40 per cent ad valorem from 28 per cent; peaches, pears, plums, and prunes, save in the fresh state or in brine, are quoted at 40 per cent from 20 per cent.
The Tariff Committee of the Senate has agreed upon a duty of 30 cents a bushel on wheat.
Mr. Underwood declared that this would increase America's food bill by 100,000,000 dollars annually.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
