RUGBY FOOTBALL.

THE OPENING DAY. SPIRITED GAMES EXPECTED. I The Rugby season oi 1922 opens in Auckland to-morrow under good aus-| p:cea. for the weather has cleared beau-j tifully for rhe occasion, and exceptional enthusiasm is shown by every club, wirh-i out exception. j?!ncp iast season the champion team. Grafton, has secured players who are expected to strengthen horh the forward and the back di—:sion.-. Ivinsella. o: Taranaki, and O'Brien, of Marlborough, both of whom played lor their province- against the Springboks, will be among the forwards, i and Buckland. from Kind's College will have the half-back position, while J. Lynch, from Wanganui. and H. Thomas, | an ("Hagoan. who played against thei South Africans, will also be given places among the backs. E. and J. Gasparich, as well as Hansen and McLeod are retir-, ins from the game, but it "is anticipated that the men mentioned will fill the gaps satisfactorily. College Rifles, who will! have the first clash to-morrow onj the showground with Grafton will, have practically the same team as that j which did so well last year, strengthened; by the addition of V. Wilson in the, backs, and possibly. later, of L. McLean; and (.'. Fletcher in the forwards —three • N.Z. reps, whose abilities are well' known. Ponsonbv and Grammar, who are iO| meet on Vctoria Park, will line out with practically the sides of last year, except that Grammar will have substitutes for Lintott. Wright and Tanner Iwho will have to stand down for a While on account of injuries), and is! rlaying Goodacre. just from Grammar School, at full-back in place of Peebles. In the dark blues there is no notable I change of personnel, but ancther on the' heads 0 f the young team that shook up the heavy opposing packs last year must j make them a tousher proposition, and Grammar will probably need al! the exrtra fit-ne r s they have get by their *—"ial Easter training to get the verdict. " I Marist Brothers, wuose opening- frame! is ara'nst University at Eden Park, have, retained the best of last year's forwards,! and have added Power, from the Poneke • Club. Wellington, and Nalder. a Ne'son player, while a younger brother of the famous Tom Lynch will be included in the backs. University's team of necessity changes a deal from year to year, but the changes this season are not so pronounced as usual. The team's most notable additions are the two backs.; Wiseman and Hardy, from Christcbureaa, and these, with Hopkins. Maxwell, Brinsden, and probably Milliken, will make a dangerous attacking division, should they strike a combination. The pack will be much the same as last year, aud may contain Wily, an Otago: player, Tne new club. Eden, which is putting five teams in the competition, will have its senior fifteen opposed by Newton at Eden Park, and a good deal of 'interest attaches to the game. Newton has paid attention to strengthening its back combination, and has secured several players of premise, including Inglis. who played for 'Varsity some seasons ago, and Ansell from the Northern district, while Xesbitt (Hawke's Bay) and Stewart (Westport) have also been added to the rearguard. A notable add'tion to the Newten forwards is H. Jones, of Opotiki, who has a considerable reputation. In these circumstances Xewton may be looked on as a regular team, worthy of respect from the best, and the opening game is likely to be a very searching test for Eden, which is depending almost entirely on recent juniors, who will have to rely on speed and combination for success against the more experienced and heavier teams. North Shore, which has practically the same team a 6 that which made a promising show last year, has a bye, and is filling in the day by travelling to Clevedon for a game against the country team. ■" The teams are:— NORTH SHORE. NEW COUNTRY DISTRICTS. ' ELECTION OF OFFICERS. j (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ; WELLINGTON. Thursday. j ' The annual meetlnir of delegates to the ' ' Xew Zealand Rugby Union opened to-day. ' The president (Mr. McLeod) presided, and ■ delegates from all parts of the Dominion • were present. Considerable discussion I was occasioned by applications for tbe for-; mation and affiliation of new minor unions j in country districts. These were East , Coast, embracing a large portion of remote country in tbe Naith Island, and the ' King Country, from Rnapehu to Thames I Valley, Including the goldfields. Tha . chairman said it was not advisable to allow country unions in thickly populated areas to become too numerous in the North Island, for the reason that they would dominate over the South Island. He considered the time had arrived for a new scheme of government for tbe Dominion. Other delegates advocated defined boun- ' darles and lessened powers, but eventually ■ tbe applications were approved without ■ qualification. \lovin~ the adoption of the report, tne chairman said he desired that all seconSarv schools should take part In the ■ Moasear Cud Competition. It was sng- ' gested that international visits take place every five years. He hoped the tax ■ Imposed by the Government on the game ■ would be temporary. Referring to the - fact that sectarianism was creeping Into ' the code in school games, the chairman recommended a firm stand, and that any • union that allowed a school to be debarred " from taking part in school competitions " should be penalised. A Canterbury remit that in future all New Zealand selection committees In each • island should have equal representation. • and a remit from Hawke's "Bay criticising ' the present method of selection of repre- • sentative teams, were defeated in favour of one that it be a recommendation to the managerrent committee taat surplus players from reams picked for A and B ■ team* in the North v. South Island match should olay a curtain-raiser on the day of ' the match. Af'er the re"e=s for snpner officers were • elected as follows: —President, Mr. H. ' Geddes." Spntb'and: treasurer. Mr. E. Wvlle Poverty Bay: auditor. Mr. O. ' Kember- New Zealand management comi ypi-tee. Messrs. fi. W. Slide fTaranaki). E. ' Tittle (Nelson). L. L. Dean (Auckland). A. ' C Kirto (North Auckland), G. A.
