LAUNDRY WORKERS.
LOWER WAGES SUGGESTED. ALSO LONGER WORKING WEEK. ( A conference under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act is sitting today in consideration of claims and counter claims, the last-mentioned filed by the employers, for a new agreement in the laundry industry. The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. T. Harle Giles, is presiding, and the representatives for the parties aTe: —-For the employers, "Messrs. J. 'Mailer, E. D. Smith, J. U. Young and Mr. S. X Wright (advocate), and for the employees, Miss C Murray, Mrs. S. Dawson and Mr J. Pnrtell (advocate).
The union is seeking a five-day working week of 41i hours and wages on a parity with those in the old agreement, while the employers are counter-claiming for a 45-hour week of six days, and a scale of wages which represents a reduction of from 5/ to 10/ per week on the old schedule. The proceedings are being taken in committee.
