A SPREE FOR THE MISSUS.
JOLLIFICATION NEAR GREY STREET. Evidence of anything but a choice etyle of life was given before Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., to-day, when a man named John Bart was charged that on Sunday week lie was privy"to the illegal sale ofliquor. He occupied a house in Yehrerton Terrace (off Grey Street), and on the morning of January 11 two policemen in plain clothes, who had inquired in Grey Street of another man about a drink, were taken into Burtfs house and introduced to Hurt. Tie introducer (McMullen) said, "These are two friends of mine; it's quite all right." Bnrt replied, "Right-o," and MeMullen. then produced a bottle of -whisky, which he sold to the policemen for 16/. Later the police raided the house, and made a catch of empty bottles, and McMullen was subsequently fined £30 for sly grog-selling. Burt, when interviewed, admitted that he knew it was illegal to allow McMnllen to sell drink in the house, and he 'had done it out of goodness of heart. Some days later when the police made another surprise call they found Bart and a woman in bed under the influence of, drink and a man on the floor with his head pillowed on .three "square riggers" j of beer, while dead marines bestrewed the premises. Burt's explanation was that the missus had just got back after two years' absence, and they had "a bit of a booze." •
Burt, who did not dispute the evidence, was fined £20 and 7/ costs.
