WAVE OF DISEASE

SPREADING WEST FROM RUSSIA T YPHXTS AND SMALLPOX. <Bj Cable.—Press .Association.—Copyriglit.) (Received 8 a.ra.y

LONDON, January 22. The Warsaw correspondent of the "Times" states that the latest military information is to the effect that there is a tremendous wave of disease sweeping westward from Russia, threatening ,the whole of Europe. Russia is honeycombed with all sorts of infectious diseases. A doctor who has returned from Smolensk, in Siberia, states that official Bolshevik statistics, which were probably incomplete, show that there were 1,350,000 cases of typhus during the six months ended March, 1919. It is estimated that the next six months showed 50 per cent increase. Typhus is raging m the Ukraine armies, and. it is believed this fact explains Denikin's defeat west of the Dneiper. When Petlura's army disbanded 30,000 men drifted through the Polish lines, and 60 per cent of them were infected. Russian smallpox is also spreading westward. —(A. and K.Z.)
