NEW FREEZING STEAMER.

GISBORNE SCHEME FINANCED. A meeting of directors of the Poverty Bay Farmers' Meat Company reported that the whole of the money nnd shares required to complete the purchase of a new ocean-going 6teamer had been subscribed. Mr. E. Anderßon, of Auckland, returned by the Niagara to-day from a trip to California. It does not often fall to the lot of the average citizen to have the handling of a £1,000 note; indeed, it is a very rare spectacle even to see a note of this denomination in circulation. Nevertheless the value of the £1,000 notes issued by the Treasury, and which were unredeemed on 24th September, represented nearly half the total note issue, (says the Melbourne "Age"), which stands to date nt .€55.209.719 10/. There are actually no fewer than 25,014 of these £1,000 notes in circulation, representing a cash value of £25,014.000. Far less common are £100 notes, of which there are only 13.039 in circulation. The most common note of all, of course, is the £1 note that is handled by everybody; of these 1."\430.„2 were in circulation at 24th September. Asainst the' present note issue of £55,260,719 the Treasury possess a gold reserve ot £23,741.104 10/, representing 42.95 per cent of the notes in circulation. Some spurious €1 Bank of New Zealand notes were placed in circulation in Eltham on Saturday (says the. "Argus.") One local shopkeeper accepted the valueless paper, and it is stated that a second one was also duped. The fraud was not discovered until the "money" was banked in the mornintr. No one who cave more lhan a cursory glance nt the "note" could be deceived, as it bad no face. It is a bit of parchment with a perfect imitation of the bpek of a £1 Bank of New Zealand note printed on each side. With a view to alleviating the housing problem in Masterton. the Mayor, Mr. W. H. Jackson, has written to Messrs. Staples and Co., Wellington, asking that j the tenancy of the old Central Hotel be .banded over to the Boroncrti Council, 'who would renovete the btlildin? nnd let lit to tenants. After the Council had I recouped itself for the netnnl outlay the i residue of the rent* received -would he devoted to the improvement of the j building generally. I "Keep Smilling" Pumice Soap, 4d; i "Keep Smiling Lino. Polish. 8d: "Keep i Smiling"' Boot Polish, Bd.—Page's Store, Kir.gsland.— (Ad.) i Who are Kolchak, Denikin, and I Yudenitch? Why have th e Bolsheviki I failed? Is there a German menace to I Russia? These are the quejies of the i hour. Fortunately light can be shed on all these subjects by Mr. Aubrey L. Williams, a New Zeaiander who has returned home after two periods of resiidence in both Tsarist and Bolshevist Russia which were separated by an interval during which he saw service with the X.Z.E.F. Mr Williams will lecture on his experiences in Bolshevist Russia at the Town Hall on Labour Day, October 27th, and on "Russia, Past and Present," on Wednesday, October 29th.—(Ad.)
