CEMENT WORKERS' PAY.
UNION WANTS 14/ A DAY. At the Arbitration Court yesterday afternoon the Auckland Lime am Cement Workers' Union asked for an award denning wages in the trade. The Court wae asked by Mr. O'Niel to give i minimum flat rate of 14/ per day. Thu union held that living was six per cent higher in Whangarei than Auckland. The union thought it was time the war bonu; was deleted. That wae why they .a-sked for a flat rate. For the employers, Mr. Wright contended that the lower rents in Whangarci more than compensated for the slightly higher cost of foodstuffs. Thi employers thought the war bonus should remain instead of a flat rate of pay being granted. His Honor Mr. Justice Stringer said it "was not a war bonus now. It wae i "'cost of living' , bonus. The Court heard evidence as to the duties of various grades of workers and reserved its decision.
