H. L. DOHERTY DEAD.
A FAMOUS TENNIS PLAYER. LONDON, August 24. The death is announced of Mr. H. L. Doherty, the famous tennis player, after a long "illness.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) i H. L. Doherty and his brother R. F., ' who died several years ago, were the two .greatest tennis players of their day. j Th-oy were at the top of their form at the I beginning of 'Che ccn.-tni.ry, when they won I almost every championship in which they ; were ongaged. and proved themselves invincible equally in England and America. 11. L. was the better piayer of the two; while they combined splendidly in doubles. R. F., the ehler brother, was the first to come into prominence, winning the English cliajiipi-o-nsihip in 1597, and holding it till beaten by his brother, who was champion -from 1902 to 1006. In 1903 the brothers won the Davis Cup for England, on the third challenge. They carried all before them, winning by four games to one. while they also held the •cup against America's challenge two years later. H. L. Doherty also proved himself a very fine golf player.
