IMPERIAL VETERAN'S DEATH.
MAJOR THOMAS BROUN
V Crimean veteran. Major Thomas I Broun, K.E.S., died yesterday afternoon, I aged 81 years, at the residence of his 'daughter,* Milton Road, Mount Eden. Deceased was an expert in New Zealand I insects, and was for a long time Gov- ] eminent Entomologist and fruit inspector in Auckland, being appointed in 1804. Major Broun was the author of a work on New Zealand eoleoptera. and contributed numerous papers which are in "The Transactions of the Ne«- Zealand Institute." Beetles was his speciali ity. Jsj x smaller volumes -were subsequently issued, containing descriptions lof 2,592 species, most of which were ' new to science. Major Broun was elected an honorary member of F.uropean scientific societies and Australian naturalists' clubs in recognition of his original researches. Deceased leaves a large collcc- ' tion of insects as a result of his hobby. J Major Broun was a native of Edin- ! burgh, and at the age of lfi years received his commission during the Crimean War. In 1556 he served in Burmah, 'and was with the 35th Royal Sussex in ~ I Bentrnl. throughout the Indian Mutiny. During the Maori War he served with' ' the Ist W'aikato Regiment in the Wai- j , kato, and also on the East Coast from j j IRC3 to the end of hostilities. Besides , . his war medals. Major Broun was also j J,'a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. . He is survived by his widow and six '. daughters. .1
