FARES AND FREIGHTS.

REVERTING TO PRE-INFLTTENZA RATES. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ACTION MELBOURNE. March 12. "Within a few days all interstate fares and freights "ill be reduced to the level which existed prior to the influenza outbreak. When the disease was at its highest, passenger fares between the States were increased by the addition of i-'i 10/ per ticket, irrespective of distance. while freights rose 7 t> per ion all round. The increase was originally authorised in order to make up. to some extent, for the greatly advanced cost of shipping due to tlie delays caused by quarantine restrii"tions. However, it has been asserted that the actual amount of increase was far short of the extra cost incurred by the companies.

It was learned to-day that the Federal Government L-< prepared to do away with the higher fares and freights, anil meet the extra expense itself.
