Mr T. Marie Giles, Conciliation Commissioner, has returned from New Plymouth, where he had been for the past fortnight In connection with three disputes. Settlements were arrived ut in two, namely, iv the Taranaki furulMhing aud the restaurant employees. In the Taranaki hotel employees' dispute sittings were held at New Plymouth and Mawera, a considerable volume of evidence being taken at the latter place. Ultimately the dispute was referred to the Court of Arbitration. To-morrow the rattan workers' dispute will ibe considered, and on the 31st that of the Auckland stage employees. Ou June 5 Mr <silc« leaves for Hamilton to hear the dispute In the country hotel business, and will afterwards visit Thames and Whangurei in connection with the same matter. Ipou returning to Auckland Mr Giles will hear the hotel employees' dispute, and afterwards goes to Uotorua on the 20th iuetnnt to hear the restaurant employees' dispute. Latpr, Mr Gileß will hear in Auckland the dispute In the tailoring trade. BOOIvBINDKItS - DISPUTE. After sitting in committee the whole or yesterday, a settlement was arrived at in the dispute liled by the Female Bookbinders' Inion. Mr Fred. Piranl ».tj advocate for the employers and Mr U. Martin for the union. This is an award covering an industry in which there was not previously one In existence. The hours of labour were tlxed at 45 per week. Wages were agreed as follow:—fc'lmt six months. 10/ per week; second six months. 12 0: second year, 13/: third year. 22,(i: fourth year. 27/G; and thereafter X.. per week. The overtime was fixed an follows:—Workers at 10/ per week, sixpence per lmnr: at 20/, iilnepcnce per hour; over 20/. 1/ |«. r hour. Nine holidays per yc-.r arc to be paid for. Clauses re preference and piecework are referred to the Court. On the motion nf Mr Piranl. seconded by Mr Martin, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Commissioner for the tact he had displayed In conducting the proceedings.
