BREAD COSTS MORE.
BAKERS DECIDE ON INCREASE. The master bakers of Auckland, tX a . ■ meeting yesterday afternoon, decided to increase the price of bread, as from 1 9 Saturday next, when the Hb. loaf will cost ojd., instead of sd. as hitherto. The
trade state that the increase will 'bring Auckland into line with other centres.
The chief reasons justifying the increase are the increasing cost of manufacture, materials, and the shortage of labour, and therefore wages. Those bakert utilising horse vehicles also had to pay more heavily for horse-feed. Looking at the position in a broad light, the members of the Association' considered th« in- ■ crease reasonable in view of the addl- ; : tional cost of all essentials to the trade.
