AUCKLAND'S ANNIVERSARY.

DAY OP ITS OBSERVANCE. LAST MONDAY THIS MONTH.

Commercial, sports, and Labour people in Auckland were represented at the public meeting held in the Town Hall yesterday, convened by Mr. J. H. Gunson (Mayor) to give citizens a chance to decide when Auckland should observe its Anniversary Day local holiday.

The Mayor explained that by rights the holiday falls on January 2!) each year. This day the year fell on Tuesday, but it had been represented to him that the day before, Monday, was the better day. It was purely a local matter, and he called the meeting because it appeared to him that the citizens themselves should fix their holiday.

Mr. Robert Burns, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, moved that the meeting request the Mayor to invite citizens to observe Monday, January 28, Sas the holiday. This seemed to him the ; better day, principally 'because it would extend the week-end, and make no break in the middle of a week's work. Mr. H. D. Heather, chairman of the Harbour Board, seconded, and the motion was supported by all the speakers. Mr. E. AY. Alison, on behalf of thu Takapuna Jockey Club, fell in with the suggestion, as did Mr. C. E. Mackie, of the Regatta Committee. The secretary of the Grocers' Assistants' Union suggested that pay-day should be made the previous Saturday, a3 their pay-day was Monday, and it would cause dissatisfaction if the wages were held till later.

The chairman said that was a reason ble request. He would sugest it to em plovers.

Mr. Gunson undertook to invite citizens of Auckland to observe the holiday on the Monday, and the meeting adjourned.
