BIRKENHEAD INFANT SCHOOL
NEW BUILDIXG AUTHORISED. The Mayor of Birkenhead (Mr. Jas. i J . McPhail) was advised by telegram today that Cabinet had approved of ,i grant for the erection of an school at Birkenhead. This means that new infant schools will be provided at Northeote and Birkenhead. ;rnd that the establishment of a manual training school will become an established fact, in accordance with the combined representations of the Auckland Education Board, the Northeote District School Committee, and the Birkenhearl and Northcote Borough Councils, and tiie decision of Cabinet will be hailed -with considerable satisfaction by the -residents of those districts.
The new infant school for Birkenhearl will be erected on the Highbury site, in close proximity to the Birkenlieau Borough Chambers, while that tor Northcote will be erected on the site acquired from the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, at the corner of Lake Road. The present infant department at the main school will be converted into a manual training school for the children of the surrounding districts, including Birkdale and GlenrieSd, and terminate Liu.- piesent arrangement, of rtundard V. and VI. children having to journey to Devonport for manual training tuition. The overcrowding; of the main school, which necessitated the pupils ot standard IV*. .being located in the Birkenhead Methodist Hall, will be overcome, and' the hiring of this hall, and also the Birkenhead Foresters' Hall, will be unnecessary, and the unsatisfactory scattered conditions of the varioua classes will be happily terminated.
