RAILWAY RESERVISTS.
THE DEPARTMENTAL BALLOT. tRy Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday. During the last fortnight Mr. T. Hampton, president of the Associated Society of Railway Servants, has visited the various centres in the North Island for the purpose of explaining to railwaymon the balloting method adopted by the Department for the selection of men to be released for service. Mr. Hampton watched the ballot on behalf of the railway servants, and he assured the members of the society that he was prepared to vouch for its fairness. He has visited Pnlmeraton North. Taihape, Obnkune, Te Kuiti, New Plymouth, Stratford, Hawera. and Wanganui. He stated to-day that after he had addressed them, the railwaymen generally expressed themselves satisfied that the best method had been adopted in the selection of the men for service, lie had explained that if there had been no ballot the heads of the Department would have undertaken the duty of saying which men could be spared, and this would have been undesirable. The Te Kuiti men had carried a motion strongly condemning the Department's ballot, but after hearing Mr. Hampton they had reversed their decision.
