ACTION DECIDED ON. The question of evolving a scheme whereby the impending difficulties consequent on the shallowness of the Waikato River would be overcome has been dealt with by the Waikato River Board and a course of action decided on. Mr A. C. Tribe, manager of the United Timber Co., representing the memorialists, waited on the board and explained the difficulties that would have to be faced if a system to-improve the river was not put in hand immediately. Mr A. G. C. Glass, chairman of the board, sympathised with the petitioners and threw the onus of the present situation on the Government. because it had not assisted the board, and it was a certainty that if help was not forthcoming* the river would be blocked—the summer had hardly started, and it was certain that the yvater would get more shallow as time yvent on. He advocated the establishment of a larger . authority, having wider powers and a more extended area —the Commissioner of Crown Lands to be chairman—to take the place' of the River Board. ••• It was resolved that the petitioners should endeavour to enlist the sympathy of the district members of Parliament, the Auckland and Country Chambers of Commerce, and the local authorities, while the board would request the Minister of Marine to make a personal inspection of the state of things on the river.
