A Russian officer interviewed by the "(Hcrnalo d'ltalia," says that Genor&l AloxiefT and Genertil Russky are the most popular generals in Russia after the Grand Duke. The so-called retreat is jnerely a reversion to the original plan of defence, bringing the line back to Minsk, which bat not yet been reached. The Germans wil! meet the same fate as Charles the Twelfth at Foitava and Napoleon at Moscow. Although lately they have been obliged to economise their shells, the Russians for military reasons were compelled to send arms and ammunition to Sereth to repulse the enemy's threat on Kieff. Thin had the political effect of convincing the Balkans that Russia was as strong e_ ever.
