General Sir lan Hamilton in » special order dated September 7. desires to record the fine feat of arms of General Rirdwood's command, the Australasian Army Corps, during the battle of Sari Bair. Thf fervent desire of all ranks to close with the enemy, the impetuosity of their onset, and the steadfast valour with which they maintained tho long struggle will surely appeal to their fellow countryhien the world over. The gallam capture of the almost impregnable Lone Pine trenches by the Australian Division, and equally the defence of the position against repeated counterattacks were exploits which would live in history. Determined assaults carried out from other parts of the Australasian Division's line were aiso of inestimable service in preventing the movement of large reinforce ments to the northern flank. The troops under General Sir A. J. Godley. particularly the New Zealand and Australian Division, were called on to carry out the most difficult military operation ever attempted- a night march and assault by several columns n intricate mountainous country, strongly entrenched, held by a numerous and determined enemy. Their brilliant conduct during the operation, and the success achieved won for them a reputation of winch any country must be proud. To U.c Australian and New Zealand Corps aid the Maoris. Sikhs. Gurkhas, and the new. British troops associated with this famous corps at Sari Ba:r. Sir lan Hamilton tenders admiration for their g~!l*ntry, and thanks for their achievements.
