ORGAN RECITAL.
rrbe usual Saturday evening municipal organ recital was given by Mr. J. Maughan Barnett on the grand organ in the Town Hall, and attracted a moderate attendance. Faulkc's Carillon in C, a fugal movement, based upon a subject to represent or imitate 'bells or carillons, was the opening solo. The massive chords of the Adagio, suggestive of ■bells "firing," or ringing, at the same moment, were played on the great clavier, attached to a deep octave pedal, witih a line sweep and fullness, the allegro was executed with facility and neatness, while the middle movement, with its delightful cantabile theme and delicate arpeggio accompaniment, was tastefully manipulated on the swellmanual. The lull power of the myriadtoned .instrument wae amply displayed in the Finale, the massive chords being delivered with weight and the sustained octave pedal made a splendid foundation of tone to the whole. Ouilmant's "Cantileue Pastorale" was effectively registered, the thumbing .was well done, and the two-tone colour scheme nicely contrasted. The elegant harmonies of Elgart "Allegro Maestoso," from his Sonata in G, were admirably unfolded, and a tasteful reading ivas given of the popular "Intermezzo" from Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana." Other solos were: "A Belgian Melody," Barnett's "Allegretto," Shelley's "Fan fare," and Wely's "Military March." The' second of the four free organ recitals will be given next Wednesday afternoon.
