SINGLE MEN.

WHERE THEY CAN BE FOUND. RECRUITING RESERVES IX NEW ZEALAND. (By Telesrapb.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The recruiting question continues to be a prominent topic of discussion and newspaper correspondence here. Some strong things are being written, generally anonymously, about young men who will not oiler themselves for service. Wellington had admittedly done exceedingly well in meeting the recent special demand for Tecniiting, but the Minister of Defence is not yet able togive exact figures bringing up to date the totals he published at the beginning of Mar.

These figures showed that Otago was the laggard military district, and in the subsequent controversy it was suggested that it had fewer unmarried men to call upon than other parts of New Zealand. I have, with the assistance of the Government Statistician, been able to ascertain the numbers of men of military age in the different distrets who are unmarried. The agea included in this table arc from 20 to 35, and the detail figures are as follows:— Auckland _ 27.51S Taranaki ~. 5,217 Ha-wke's Bay . 4,855 Wellington 10JS7 MarlboTough 1,74S Nelson 5,400 "Westland .i. 1,804 Canterbury ..-•. 16,255 Otago 11,705 Southland 0,103 Total unmarried males between ages of 20 to 35, inclusive - 100,583 Tiie figures made public at Dunedin by the Minister of Defence, when applied to this table chow that the registrations under the system inaugurated in February last equalled 11 per cent of the available single men <yf military age in Auckland military district, eight per cent of the Canterbury total, six and a-half per cent of Wellington, and four per cent of the Otago resources which could be tapped without calling upon married men.
