UNDER MARTIAL LAW.

SEVERE RULE. A SIGNALMAN SENTENCED. CAPE TOWN, January 15. The Natal strikers yesterday stopped a light engine at Greyville, near Durban, and maltreated and carried off the fireman. The control officer ordered 'the strikers to release the fireman to-day, otherwise stern measures would be taken. The strikers at once complied. The control officer has sentenced the signalman, whose signals first held up the engine, to 12 months in prison with hard labour. He is the first railwayman to be convicted under martial law. The martial law in the Orange Free State is especially severe. A strict Press censorship has been established in addition to the other regulations. Colonel Duttoit, the chief control officer, has prohibited strikers from leaving their homes, forbids any displays of the red flag, and prohibits the rendering of any assistance to the strikers, direct or indirect, either in funds or goods.
