STOEY OF INTRIGUE AND TRAGEDY. Mies Florence Warden ie well-known as a writer of powerful and engrossing romances, but she ha* probably never written one of greater sustained interest .than that entitled "A Mystery of the Thames.' , It is the story of an English, aristocratic faintly, a scion of which, already entangled -with a designing widow, seeks marriage with a fascinating American heiress. Several lives stand 'between him and the title and estates; he has a cousin, who becomes a rival for the lady's hand; and, in consequence of these complications, a most interesting situation is developed. Thea there is a succession of mysterious tragedies, in -which both cousins seem to be involved. Death -by violence, or under suspicioue circumstances, overtakes those persons who come between th» two ooustne and the inheritance, and the plot thickens until the revelation of the whole villainy is reached. The interest of the tale never flags, and it has all the fascination of a detective story, mingled with excellent characterisation, mystifying incident, and has a, thread of sentiment interwoven 'with the sordid love affaire of one of the cousins. It is th*t type of * novel which has all the compelling attraction of tragedy, combined -with deep human interest. The happy ending is m gratifying as the elucidation of the mystery ie unexpected. The opening instalment of "A Mystery of the Thames' , will be published in the "Star" of Monday next, and the tale will ,be continued in future issue*.
