SHORTAGE OF LABOUR.

(By Telegraph.Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHtTRCH.. this flay. Shortage of labour was the chief subject of discussion at a meeting of the general committee of the Industrial Association. It was reported that the committee had been taking active steps to investigate the prevailing shortage of skilled labour in Canterbury. The secretary had posted 1.256 circulars to manufacturers "nd employers in the province asking them to provide information regarding their own needs in the matter of labour and the. replies already received had thrown a great deal of light on the. fashions. It was clear that there was a serious shortage of workers in many industries, the trouble being a long standing one. Some employers had been ■tryinjr for years to get a full staff of suitable hands and had failed. The imported worker, it was added, was usually not as useful as the local man, owing to his comparative lack of adaptability. It was decided that the association should join the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand and that Messrs Hercus and Laurenson should be appointed delegates to the conference to be held in Wellington in October.
