MOUNT EDEN NUISANCES.
(To the Editor.) Sir. —I endorse, in all particular*, the letter of •■Sufferer'" in the issue of your ; valuable journal of the 2nd inst.. and, I with the writer of same, crave, the better policing of this thickly-populated, district, as the conduct of larrikins and hoodlums has now readied a point that if not .speedily stopped, t)he residents themselves will require to 'take the law into their own hands by administering befitting punishment to these misguided individuals. I submit, air, thai there is too much street roaming at night, indicating the non-employment of valuable time at a most critical ajre of these boys and youths, also the lack of home training and parental control. In regard to the •bugles, which have blared unceasingly and tortured the district for months past, this is a matter requiring immediate repression, according to the law of the Dominion .. protecting the. public against offences of this description. But. sir, this, is a long-suffering borough, as the scholars at the puWje s-c.hool find out to their sorrow -when. for hours at a time, no water (gas charged though it be) is available for consumption, despite the weary protestations of the worthy headmaster, whose duties are, no doubt, quite onerous enough without the additional burden o>: a water diviner being thrust upon him. Might I ask, what are the School Committee doing? Trusting these matters will receive prompt attention.— I am. etc.. VERB. SAP.
HOBSON'S BAY RESERVE."" (To the Editor.) ■Sir, —Your i?. ; ae of September 3 contains a *opy of draft of lease in reference to the above, as approved by the Harbour Board on one hand, a.nd the two contracting parties. Parnell and Kenrncra. on the other, and which, at the sitting of the Parnell Council, it was proposed should be signed. My object in writing is to ask, that in the event of this being done—the signing of tho lease—to what extent the lessees are responsible for the fulfilment of the contract. So far as I know, there has Tjeen given to the public no official estimate of cost: neither can I find that the present Council are in any way commissioned by the ratepayers to enter into any such contract, the -wisdom of ■which js very doubtful, and the cost altogether unknown. In the event olf the ratepayers refusing to sanction the loan, which I feeJ pretty confident they will, are the individual inenrber? of the Council, the appointed trustees, or the. whole body of ratepayers liable to action at laiv for non-fulfil-ment? However desirable this work
may bo. it seems rather to be a ma.tter for '"Greater Auckland" than for two suburban bodies like Parnell and Reznuera: and there is also this to be remembered, that probably before the financial liabilities are extinguished, the property itself -will have reverted to the Harbour Board.—l am, etc., A.B.
