S.M. Whare Taha was charged, under the Tohunga Suppression , Act, with certain unlawful practices. Tin , case resulted in a con\ir.tiou. the (kic and expenses totalling £33 U./U. It wan proved that accused treated several jx-isoiis al Mohaka and Wairoa for devils in -sick persons, and so terrified them that they feared to call in a doctor, lie suggested that some of the .women were wasting their lives on old men, and made overtures on his own account. Accused, in defence, denied having treated patients or having charged them, saying that he only prayed to God for them." Mr. Carton characterised the accused as a gigantic frnud and low blackguard, and expressed the hope, that this I case would be a warning to .Maori i people not to consult such utter frauds.
