Herbert Gandy, Thomas Myere, nd Albert Tkkner -were fined 10/ apiece. ON THIS DRIFT. Minnie Black, a woman of 40 years, rtio had been drinking about town for ome weeks, made her third recent npeiirance for drunkenness, and was also harged that she was all idle and disorderly person. She stated that about our months ago she was working at r rankton Junction, and came to town rith £50, which she had dissipated in laying her board of £1 a week at a loardinghouse, the name of which she otlJd not remember. She could give no lear account- of her movements, or of /here the rest of her money bad gone, ml was remanded for a week to give or mental mistiness time to clear. WHERE THE WIFE CAME IN. Andrew Doherty, aged 40 years, made is entrance on a charge of having socited alms in the street, and was introneed by the Sub-Inspector as a very :oQd specimen of a fag-end of a spree. "V man, the Sub-Inspector continued, vas ordinarily a hard-working fellow, fho had a very respectable, wife, but rho came to town recently and got on he spree. Running short of cash, and ;reat!y craving lubrication, Uoherty had tuck up pedestrians and requested the lecessary purchasing power. The Subnepector added that the man's wife had uflicient money to keep him going, and ra-s ready to stand by him. The obviously penitent person in the lock was. prohibited, and, on it being tated that Uie wife would pay the costs, .he charge was dismissed. ALLEGED BURGLARY. Oscar Frederick Rolandor, a eieklyooking. young man of i'.\ years, who did lot show signs of robust mentality, was barged that on two occasions in August ie broke and entered the dwelling of E. V Williams, and stole a. gold necklet and i gold ring, valued respectively at £15 md £5. Chief Detective McMahon ask?d for a week's remand, remarking that >the r charges would likely be laid. The ■emajid was granted, and bail allowed in :wo sureties of £100 each. POCKETED ALL THE watt.ii. William John Smith, a carter, was in i very genial humour on 12th August, ivhen he went to the Hobson Hotel. He went into the billiard- room, and struck up an acquaintance with the marker, ivinning hi* way so much into the other man's confidence that the marker went out, leaving Smith in charge. He returned a few minutes later to find that Smith had interpreted his instruction to tnke charge too" liierxlly, having put the. three billiard ball* from the table in his pocket, and pone for a walk. At the end of the walk was a second-hand dealer's shop, where Smith exchanged the hall* for a shilling. Charged with unlawfully possessing himself of a guinea" 5 worth of billiard ballrf? Smith said that he was drunk at the time, and ha<i never done nnythin" like that beforp. The police gave him a. good recommendation as to character, and he was convicted aud ordered to come up for sentence when called on; also to refund the second-hand dealer hie shilling. MISCELLANEOUS. .loseph Bertie Heveriiige. charged with having assaulted Charles O'Hrien yesterday, was remanded till Wednesday. i'ercy Chapman, charged with having incited people to assnfilt Constable Collins during the Saturday night street affray that occurred about a fortnight ago, was remanded for a week. King Sang, for leaving his enrt standing so an to obstruct the pedestrian crossing at the corner of <irey and Pitt streets, was fined •">/ and 7/ costs. John P. Donovan, a prohibited person, told a constable that he went into an hotel just to nee a man about a dog, hut the originality of the excuse earned him no remission of line; it was, as usual, 40/ and 7/ costs.
