THE FLOWER SHOW.

EXHIBITION WELL PATRONISED. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions which prevailed yesterday, there was an excellent attendance, both in the afternoon and evening at the Auckland Horticultural Society's annual Spring show, at the Town Hall. In the absence of the Mayor at Hamilton, the Mayoress (Mrs. C. J. Parr) officially declared the show open, and in doing so paid a tribute to the excellent work which the Society did in holding such splendid exhibitions at oacli season of the year. The success of tho spring show, added Mrs. I'arr. vru» a matter for sincere congratulation to the Society. .Mr. IX Hamel. of Dunedin. who ju.lp-d the daffodil"*, was invited by Mr. William Hundley to :iddre->.-< a few remarks to those present, upon the nature of the exhibition. .Mr. llainel said that from a cultivator's point of view the show mi unique. The display by Mr. Henry Brett in the centre of the nail was alone worth coming to see. Up had been present at last year's daffodil show in Auckland.' and be had no hesitation in saying that there was. even in a year, a distinct improvement. Professor Thonuis' seedlings were simply superb, and in his opinion they would easily hold their own at any exhibition in the Old Country. It -was regrettable, however, that there were not more young exhibitors. In Punedin there were a great many young hybridists who. in a few years, would be astonishing the Dominion with their work. The Auckland Society was,, added Mr. Ilumil. to be congratulated on the excellent dispay at the prosent exhibition. The show waft again well patronised today. It remains open until to-morrow evening. The judge of the principal section*. Mr, D. Hamel, of Dunedin, was much struck with Mr. Brett's display of sweet pea.s, and the bowl of carnations. V'Tho carnation, which is a recent importation from California. U exceptionally lino, :ind the riwee-t pen? are perfection." paid the judge. Mc was nl?o favourably impressed with the vase» of daffodils on .stands exhibited by Miss (ioldie. He thought this style should be encouraged by arranging a competitive class. "That exhibit could not have liepn beaten "■' any -show I have attended." he remarked concerning the stand with which Mr. l>. K. Kirker carried iytX the Champion Daffodil Vase for forty varieties. All the flowers were clean and fre«h, without coarseness. The second prize stand, shown by Mr. W. F. lluckland, of Cambridge, .showed ;'. want of cultivation. ■Mr. 11. 1.. J. Hull, who 'annexed the Sydenham competition, had a very clean exhibit, which was easily first, in spite of the fact that the second prize lot shown by Mr. Kirker was el.so of exceptional merit. In the eighteen variety class. ML*< Q. Kirker won with "a beautifully even lot, beautifully staged." Miss ~ Hurvcy, who came next, also showed some very tin; blooms. Among tin , single blooms Pro- , fi«sor Thomas practically swept the board, carrying off nil the firsts, except ; one, the parvi coronal, where 'Mr. Bull ! won with a very fine flower of Circlet. , Mr. llainel said the Professor's seedlings i were, superb, and many of them would i command prizes anywhere.
