(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) .CH.RISTCHUBCH. Wednesday. The fiuding of the adjonroed tneetiee of the stewards of tbe Oauterbury Jockey Club I to inquire into the facts surrounding the scratching of The Hover in the Grand National Hurdle Race was as follows:— "The stewards Sod that Tile Rover was entered and fully paid up for the New Zealand Grand National Hurdle Race, 1912 The liars* was fit and well the day of the 1 race, and was backed heavily by the public, and laid against in an unwarrantable manner. Tbe horse was scratched at 11.45 a.m. on the day the Grand National Hurdle Race was to be run. on an undated authority, signed by Wright, lessee of the borse. Xo notice or Intimation that the horse was to be scratched was received by either Price, Ihe mau In charge of the horse, or the secretary of the club. The lessee, baring raced the horse without success ou the flat during the greater part of bis lease, of one year, induced the lessor, about June last, to waive io<. condition in tbe lease that the horse should not tie raced over hurdles, and then entered him for tbe Grand National Hurdle Race, and prepared him to run, and, according to tbe evidence of Price, acting on instructions from Wright, the horse wae jumped over bardies op tbe morning of tee day of tbe. race. On the running of Tbe [ Rover in the Jumpers' Flat Race on tbe first day of the meeting, tbe horse seemed to have an excellent chance of winning: tbe Grand National Hurdle Bace." Questioned by the stewards as to why The Rover was scratched for the race at 11.45 on the day it was to be ran, Wright. the lessee, gave as bis reason that be was afraid of injuring tbe horse. He hoped to get a further lease of him from September SO, 191:.'. The reasons given tor •α-atcbliig The Rover, taken in conjunction wlta tit* state of tbe betting market, satisfied the stewards that Wright, the lessee, was guilty of corrupt practices, -within the meaning of the rules of racing, in so scratching the horse. They disqualified him for a term of two years. The stewards would like to add that In coming to this decision they recognise that if the betting public would adhere to the I law by not betting with bookmakers, the case would not have arisen, because no betting would then take place until the totalisator opened.
