CHANGING THE NAVAL BASE.
SYDNEY'S LOSS IN TRADE. EIGHTY THOUSAND A YEAR. (Received 8.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The transfer of the naval base from Sydney to Auckland means a trade loss to Sydney of from £80.000 to £100.000 a year. Mr. Kitchen (managing director of the Sydney Soap and Candle Company) suggests a remedy. lie says: "Let the Com- ! monwealth Government approach the I Imperial authorities with a proposal to jointly appoint a victualling officer, who : might act on behalf of both, buying for the Imperial and Australian fleet vessels. | There would then be a chance of competi ing against New Zealand. If New Zea- ! land can supply goods at a lower price (than Australia, then good luck to her; j but the odds are that we should keep I most of the trade we have had before."
