Private Clifford, winner of the King's Prize at Bisley. has been awarded also the Duke of Connaught's challenge cup. Burglars entered a residence in Bellevue Hill, Sydney, and stole jewellery valued at over £3OO. Lady Hall-Jones, at Portsmouth, renamed the battleship New Zealand Zcalandia. in the presence of a larg* gathering of officers and New Zealanders. Charles Fern, Labour candidate, has been returned unopposed for the Cobar vacancy. A tentative agreement has been arrived at in the Adelaide aerated water strike, and the men resumed to-day. A man supposed to be an American multi-millionaire, named Bishop, committed suicide with a revolver in Paris yesterday. He suffered from an incurable disease. Mrs. Pethick Lawrence, the suffragette leader, who was sentenced to two months' imprisonment over the demonstration in Parliament Square a fortnight ago. has been released on bail. The legality of her conviction is not questioned, owing to the principal witness not having been sworn. A passenger train travelling at a high speed was thrown into a ditch at Paducah, Kentucky. Four persons were killed and 10 injured. The Canadian Government will be asked to appoint a Commission to investigate the present system of telephones telegraphs and mail delivery with a view to reform. Nikolaus Njegus has been sentenced to imprisonment for seven years with hard labour on a charge of attempting to murder Dr. Hochenburger, Minister for Justice, in the Lower House of the Peichsrath on October 5. He fired four shots at the Ministerial benches. No one was hit. but the Chamber was for a while in a state of panic. Four sticks of dynamite and 12 loaded revolvers were discovered in the penitentiary at Lavenworth, Kansas, and a plan by which a number of desperate prisoners intended to escape was foiled. It is expected that the Naval Prize Bill, embracing the Declaration of London, will be rejected by the House of Commons, on the ground that it is too imporUat to be rusaed. -_~ _.
