"The waste of public money which, you arc causing is simply scandalous, said Mr. Justice Edwards this morning to counsel engaged for the defence in a case, during the hearing of which he frequently rebuked counsel for. repeating •his questions. Later in the case his Honor remarked: "You have already asked the question, and I won't allow any question to be asked more than half a-tlozen times."
At the committee meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held on Monday afternoon, a hearty vole of thanks was accorded to Mrs. Benjamin and the other membei's of the Ladies' Committee, who had increased the funds of the Society to the amount of £6B 7/ by means of a Name Quilt subscription. It was -also announced that the Government has made the Society a grant of £75. The report of the sub-committee,' set up to make arrangements regarding the essay competition, was adopted, and it was decided to advertise the competition in the daily papers. Mr. Robert Wright was elected to a seat on the committee, as representing "the Master Carriers' Association.
While a train was being shunted at Scarsdale (Victoria), the brakes on one of the vans refused to act, and the van dashed down an incline and collided with several stationary tracks. _ Seven persons were injured, two seriously. The .damage; to rolling stock: was slight.
