BRUSH WITH BURGLARS.
A DESPERATE TRIO. OTTAWA, August 27. _ The police in Winnipeg had a sensational encounter yesterday with a trio of burglars. Although unarmed a constable who had traced the men to a disorderly house made a courageous attempt to arrest them, but was shot in the hip and disabled. The housebreakers then made off. but brought up when they found that they were being chased bv another policeman, and opened fire upon their pursuer. Fifteen shots were fired at the second constable, one bullet cutting a hole in his trousers. The desperadoes then jumped oh to a tram and ordered the driver to get up all possible speed, but a "youth very thoughtfully pulled the trolley pole off the overhead wire, and thus brought the cars to a standstill. Leaving the tram the fugitives covered with their revolvers two men who w-ere driving past in a buggy, and took possession of the vehicle themselves. But the resourceful youth, who had already foiled the ruffians, was once more in their way, for the lad pluekily grabbed the reins of the struggling horse, and managed to dodce the burglars' fusillade of bullets till tho police came up. More shooting then fol lowed, but tiie murderous trio were finallv captured, though not until Constable Trainor had been fatally wounded. This officer had l>c«"n suspended only reeently for not chasing a highwayman, who "had fired o n him. The police in Winnipeg are armed with only bludgeons, but these weapons haven't much chance against the automatic pistols carried by highwaymen and other desperate characters.
