The Mayor (Mr. C. .T. PaTT) returned from a visit to Cambridge last evening Mr W. W. Kyme, manager for Sargood, Sou and Ewen's Gisborne branch, arrived in Auckland yesterday afternoon, and is staying at the Central Hotel. Mr. R. K. Doherty, assistant manager of the Enron Steam Ship Company's branch at Sydney, was a passenger by the Tofua to-day for the Islands and Sydney. Captain George Holford, master of the U.S.S. Co.'s Tofua, left by that vessel to-day for the Islands and Sydney, on a holiday visit. He was accompanied by Mrs. Holford. Mr Walter Monk, until recently associated with Mr Hugh Ward's theatrical company, left last evening for Sydney by the Maheno, to make arrangemen/ for an Australian lecturing tour by Mr Clememt Wragge. Mr. John Philip Sousa, the eminent bandmaster, is accompanied throughout the tour of Sausa's Band by Mrs. Sousa and the Misses Sousa. The ladies are visiting Rotorua. Mr. Eugene G'Conor, formerly member for Buller in the House of Representatives is at present in a private hospital in Auckland. Mr. O'Conor has been in bad health for some time. On Saturday, on behalf of the staff of Messrs. Dalgety and Company's Palmerstou branch, Mr. T. A. Moodie, the local manager, presented Mr. H. D. Batchelor, who has been transferred to the Auckland branch, with a handsome suit case. Mr. David J- Munro, acting secretary of the Auckland branch of the Federated Seamen's Union, left for Wellington by last night's express to attend a coherence of secretaries of the union in the Dominion. Mr. Munro expects to return to Auckland about Saturday next.
Brigadier Bray, officer in charge of the Salvation Army's social work in New Zealand, who has just returned from attending the International Social Congress in London, and the officers in charge of the Salvation Army's work in the North Island, who has been attending the Melbourne Congress, have arrived in Auckland, and will be conducting meetings here. Mr. H. L. Benjamin, 8.E., A.I.KE., son of Mr. Lionel N. Benjamin, of Auckland, has accepted a position in the sales organisation of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, New York After graduating from the New Zealand University, Mr. Benjamin spent two years in the Company's factory in Pittsburg, and later on spent two years on the road, on erecting work for the same company.
On Saturday evening last, Dr. Craig, who has been medical superintendent of the Mercury Bay Hospital for the past five years, was entertained at a banquet in the Whitianga Hotel, when representatives from all parts of the district were present. The usual toasts were given and responded to, and an adjournment was then made to the Public Hall, where the Chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr. D. A. McLean) presented the doctor with a solid silver salver, suitably inscribed, on behalf of the residents of Mercury Bay, Kuaotunu and Gumtown. Mr. Barker presented a handsome illuminated address on behalf of the reresidents of Tairua, and Mr. F. Meikle presented Mrs. Craig with a silver gilt sugar and cream set on behalf of the residents of Mercury Bay, Kuaotunu, and Gumtown. Dr. Eade (Dr. Craig's successor), Messrs. T. Brown, P. Carroll. P. Hornibrooke and the hon. secretary (Mr. C. Courtenay) gave valedictory addresses. Dr. Craig suitably replied, and later dancing was indulged in.
