FATAL LIFT ACCIDENT.
A MAN'S MISTAKE. Douglas Manttan, a resident of Northcote, died in the Mount Pleasant Hospital yesterday as the result of injuries received in a lift accident in the Security Buildings on Wednesday. It appears that Manttan was using the goods lilt at the rear of the building to take some heavy cases to the ground floor. He was working the machine himself, and when he got to the bottom he stopped the lift, and took out the cases, but neglected to close the door of the cage. While he was helping a carrier to load the cases for removal a tenant upstairs pulled the lever which took the lift to the upper storeys. After loading a case Manttan evidently straightened himself up, and, stepping back from the cart, fell through the doorway into the lift well in the, basement, and sustained injuries which ended fatally. The deceased, wl , had arrived recently from Christchurch, was 26 years of age, and leaves a young widow. An inquest was being held at the Criterian Hotel at 3 this afternoon.
