MEETINGS.
ST. ANDREW'S SOCIETY. A large gathering of members of the Auckland St. Andrew's Society mat In the Choral Hall last evening to commemorate the 140 th anniversary of the hlrtih ot Sir Walter Scott. Tihe musk: contributed by the St Andrew's Pipe 'Band, under Mr. Charles McDonald, late pipe-major of the Black Watch, helped to make the concert a complete success. Mr. (P. M. iMackay, In addressing those present, said that the I main object of their society was to engrave Jn the minds of their children a lore for Scottish music and literature. It was tie wish of 'the members to establish an annual , Caledonian sports gathering, and tt was 1 also very necessary that a piano should be secured as an adjunct towards the training of the young folk in national music and dancing. The Rev. H. Steele-Craik delivered an interesting and Instructive address on the Jife and writings of Sir Walter -Scott. Appropriate Items, Including Highland dances, Scottish choruses, and orchestral numbers were rendered by members. THE MISSION TO SEAMEN. The usual monthly meeting of the Auckland Branch of the "Flying Angel" Missions to Seamen was held In the Diocesan Church Office last evening, a large number of the committee being present. The Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Crossley) took the chair. The Missloner (Mr Arthur P. Cowie) submitted his report, which is as follows: Visits to shipping, 34; services held in institute, 9; parcels of literature distributed, 61; seamen having found employment through agency of mission, 13; seamen assisted in various ways, 11; Hospital visited, 4; letters of gratitude received, 15; letters written by or on behalf of seamen, 160; letters received for seamen, 94; concerts provided for seamen, 4; pledges signed against strong drink, 1; attendance at the nine services, 312; attendance for the month, ' 938. This mission work is ever growing, and extends a welcome and ever open door to seamen of all creeds, nations, and colours. i No chaTge is made, and a safe anchorage whilst in port Is guaranteed. GRAFTON DISTRICT SCHOOL. The naual meeting of the committee was 1 held last evening. The school roll stands at 730 —a slight increase on the number I last reported. Accounts were passed ifor payment to the value of £ls 14/5.
