THE GOLDFIELDS.

TELLURIDES PROPRIETARY. HIGH ASSAY RESULTS. The following was posted on the Exchange to-day:— "Copy of assays by Professor Jannan from stone brought from the new five foot lode by the chairman: General sample, gold 2/6, silver £l3 5/5; total per ton, £l3 17/11. Picked sample, gold 11/2, silver £3B 5/1; total, per ton, £3B 16/3. Both samples carried tellnrum." NEW SYLVIA.

The directors report that the New Sylvia battery has up to date treated over 250 tons and that from assays the future treatment of the ore is assured and that it is payable at a minimum of cost. They regret, however, to report that the main engine and boiler, which was only installed as a stand-by in case of water supply failing, has been proved on a thorough trial unsuitable and incapable of doing the work intended of it. Necessary steps are being taken to remedy this defect And although the battery is now running with water power at half speed, new and more up-to-date boiler and engines will have to be installed. Meantime it is hoped that temporary alterations will suffice to keep the battery going at half the speed of its capacity at least, depending largely upon the water supply. The directors have this day appointed Mr P. N. Kingswell, managing director. THE WAIHI MINE. RUMOURED DEVELOPMENT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. It is freely rumoured about town that very important developments have occurred in the Waihi mine in the vicinity of the low level, and that the future prospects have been considerably enhanced thereby. No official information is available, but is is further stated that ore of rich quality, with gold showing freely, has been met with. If the local sharemarket can be taken as any indication, the fact that Waihi shares were transferred u low as 59/9 this morning would seem to point to the developments not being of special importance. (By Telepraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Talisman buyers 51/6, sellers 52/. THE SHAREMARKET.

THAMES DEEP LEVELS. An important message was received by wire about 3 p.m. yesterday from the supervisor of the tunnel at 1000 ft, which is now well within the boundary of the Saxon mine. The wire was as follows: "Quantity of water got in the low level tunnel; speed of pumps increased 25 per cent." This may either mean that a reef is close at hand or that the hard country having been passed through, all the old workings in the northern end of the field are being drained.
