HELP FOR IMMIGRANTS.
Mrs. C. M. Nelson, president of the Ladies' Benevolent Society, and Mr. F. G. Ewington, hon. secretary to the gentlemen's branch, have been approached by Mr. Walter Barratt, representative of the East End Emigration Committee, London, to see if, and to what extent, the Benevolent Society can help the London Society to find suitable cheap lodgings for immigrants arriving in Auckland, and to get the new arrivals sent into country districts. Both Mrs. Nelson and Mr. Ewington promised to bring the matter before the Benevolent Society, and Mr. Ewington. informed our reporter that he had received a promise from Mr. Edwin Hall, secretary to the Agricultural Society, to give what advice and help he could under the circumstances. The President of the London Society is H.R.H. Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyle. Amongst the vice-presidents are Lord Brassey, and the Bishops of London, Stepney and Islington. Mr. Barratt is now in the South Island. Mr. Ewington tolrJ our reporter that, in view of the terrible distress that prevails in some parts of the United Kingdom, and the hard condition of life in which thousands of work people under exhausting toil from morning till night earn a mere pittance, he would like the Benevolent Society, if possible, to cooperate with the London Society, and he would welcome advice from any quarter as to the best way of getting the new arrivals into country districts for work and for ascertaining where they can get reasonably cheap lodgings until they succeed in getting work. Without the co-operation of Country districts, Mr. Ewington fears that the Benevolent Society may not be able to give the requisite advice and help to immigrants. Mr. Ewington said he was informed that the Labour Department could not Bee its way to undertake this branch of work. ■>
