TREE-PLANTING CAMP FOR CONSUMPTIVES.

PER CENT. OF CURES. Hon. D. Buddo, Minister of Public Health, paid a visit to the Karere treei planting camp, near Cambridge, yesterday. The camp is connected with the Waikato Sanatorium for consumptives at Cambridge, and is in the charge of Sister Urquhart. There is accommodation for 24 patients in tents, and the employment fof the patients is treeplanting. The Minister was welcomed, and Mr. Buckle, who spoke on behalf of the patients, said that the inmates had planted 490 acres in trees. Mr. Buddo said that he was very pleased to hear of the success of the Camp. The District Health Office (Dr. Purdy) said that the experiment of establishing the camp had proved satisfactory. Speaking of the work done at the Waikato Sanatorium, he said that 600 patients had been treated and 22 per cent, of them had been cured, while in other cases there had been mitigation of the disease. The camp at Karere was for those who had been treated at Cambridge, and, though benefited, were not quite fit to go out into the world again as completely cured. There had been no deaths at Karere, which was the first place of its kind in the world, and about which Dr. Mason was receiving inquiries from all parts of the globe.
