j : A special meeting of the above Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. Alfred Reyes) being in the chair. Councillor T. Hadfield moveu, _nd it was seconded by Councillor E. G. Skeates, That the Council purchase a carting plant of their own, and erect t>r procure suitable stable accommodation." This was supported ,by the Mayor,' Councillors Pitt and "Wallace, and carried. An amendment, by Councillors Kay and Clements: "That tenders be called for the cartage of metal, etc., W a period of twelve months," was defeated.
Councillors Hadfield .' and Skeates were appointed to make arrangements as "to stabling, etc. 5 On the motion of Councillors "Wallace I and Pitt, it was decided to authorise' 1 Mr. Rich, of the firm of Rich and Dimt cry, to act on behalf of the Council, in t conjunction with the Mayor, to procure i the necessary plant. It was reported to the Council that , there was a considerable amount of riding on the footpaths, and it was resolved . to write to the local constable,, asking ; him to take proceedings. The Foreman of Works was also notified to the. same effect. .~. % : : PITT-STREET METHODIST CIRCUIT. The March quarterly meeting of the Pitt-street Methodist Church was held in the Church parlour on Wednesday, April Ist. A la-rge a_*l fully representative gathering received, considered, and adopted reports from .'all circuit' Churches. The financial statement shows an income of £214, and a corresponding expenditure for the quarter. Consider ing the Conference and general upkeep, the meeting felt much satisfaction in the adoption of the statement. The various reports work of the circuit showed' progress, also, an increased membership on the roll, and a greater diligence for Sunday School development. There had also been a forward movement throughout the circuit to introduce Wesley Guild work for the young people. The Kingsland Jubilee Sunday School wasa special feature, and to all members encouragement and inspiration were received in the. consideration of the possibilities of the work during the coming quarter. "WOMEN'S POLITICAL'LEAGUE. _- -. - ,; The annual meeting- of the Women's Political League was held, yesterday afternoon" in the Schoolroom; Pltfcstreet Church, Mrs ' Kirkby-presiding: Th"e"6fHcers elected for tie- ensuing year were. -—President, Mrs Rule; vrce:presidents,:_lesdames Dewar and- • Duffy;, treasurer, Mrs Dayles-(re-elected): secretary, Mrs Gibsonl" The treasurer's re-; port showed that the League's financial af-' fairs were sound, also that the membership had increased in the past'year. Much Indignation was expressed at the statements attributed to Bishop Neligan on the New Zealand system of secular education, aud the likelihood of this country's people lapsing Into Paganism. Mr Bagnall's sentiments were heartily endorsed by the members, who thought the Bishop would do well to look Into the state of affairs e_isting in England in this connection. The members also decided, with reference to some remarks recently passed by the Rev. X. X. North on "proprietary clubs,"- that the new Gaming Act appears to stand in some need of amendment. The following resolution was carried: "That the atteniion of the Minister for Education be drawn" to the ' recommendations made a short time since by the Auckland Headmasters'' Association in favour of Stateprovided school books, and that he be ur_ed- to take steps "to act upon the sug-. -estion of a body of men who are in a position to understand the hardships frequently entailed upon persons of limited incomes under the present system." ONEHDNGA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Onehunga School Committee was held last evening, when there were present: Messrs S. R. Skinner (chairmnn), Breese, Ho'ru, Lomas, Glanfield. Blackwood, Watts, and Brookfield (secretary).- - -.- - ;•■-.-- Roll.—The headmaster reported that the primary department - showed a roll total of 634, with an average attendance of 561, and - the Secondary department a roll of 53, with an average of 49. '-"'-*" ;■''■-"--. Subsidy .—ln to "the request, of ■ the, committee that the Board of Education's architect provide plans for the improving of the school grounds, the Secretary (Mr V. E. Rice), referred, to a-previous, letter w-hich stated. that as the. Government subsidy had not yet been received, .the work conld not be authorised. Several, members spoke strongly, on. the. action .of the Board in delaying, the. work, especially in .view of the promise made by the Hon... Geo. Fowlds that the subsidy would be forthcoming. Annual Report.—-The annual ■ report stated that the operatta produced, by some, of the school pup.iis had resulted .in a-profit qf £42 5/9. and on this the Government was to given £ for. £ subsidy.. .Tie .installing of a miniature rifle range In the school ground had been deferred, owing to the ■ Govern- ;! ment taking the matter <sver. In respect to the'master's residence, the committee, after full consideration,, had . recommended tie ' Board to lease the property instead of sellins it. ■- ■ •
Complaint.—The headmaster complained that a number of persons allowed goats and geese to wander in the playground, and urged that action be taken to prevent the nuisance. A resolution was passed calling apon owners to abate the nuisance at once, failing which proceedings would be taken.
