SEVERE DROUGHT IN CANTERBURY.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHLTRCH, this day. '. The drought has reached a very sever* stage, and is a menace to the prosperity of the farmers. The harvest is in full swing, but the yield is very light on light land, though better on heavier soils. The greatest fear is for feed, and ttfa prospects for the winter are discouraging, as this is the second dry season in succession. Shortage of feed would causa an over supply of sheep and lambs -tithe market would consequently drop in prices, which would be a severe loss ta farmers in the present state of prices. The firmness of yesterday's wool sales, however, may be counted as a compensation, and as the crop is not now, as ifarmer years, the farmers' sole reliance, the general prosperity of the district may not be seriously affected.
