LADIES' REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY. GISBORNE BEATS AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") GISBOBNE, this day. At Victoria. Domain yesterday afternoon the Auclilaud laaies' hockey team were <leieated by tlie Uisborue ladies by 3 goals to nil. Froni the commencement, the spectators, who had assembled in large numbers to witness tlie contest, were treated to one of the finest exhibitions of hockey yet seen on the local ground. Miss Marls Clark, the Auckland captain, had the. best of the bully, oil, and the visitors carried play iuto the home teams quarters, where Woodbine .and Johnson, with a powerful drive, sent the ball, well up the .ield. M. Alison relieved the pressure by a line drive to the boundary, aud ihe home forwards then set up a determined attack on the visitors' goal, and two or three fruitless shots were made at the net, but the coolness of Auckland's goalkeeper, E. Alison, saved the situation. Frqni a fine passing rush by the home team, A. DeLatoUr drew first blood. This reverse caused the visitors to liven up; aud their forward divisions carried play close. to the Gisborne circle, where C. laaris Clark, after working her way into the circle, had an ineffectual shot. The local players, by a pretty passing run, soon menaced the Auckland goal, but the defensive 'play ; of "tie Auckland fullbacks, N. Mclndoe and M. Alison, proved too sonnd, and play centred. Towards the close of the first spell, L. Matthews, from a passing rush, was instrumental in adding another goal to Gisborne's score. During the greater part of the second spell the home team kept the visitors penned in their own quarters, and with the exception of one goal, their inability to score speaks volumes for the defensive play of the Auckland ladies.. The visitors were entertained to afternoon tea after the match .and this evening a social is being tendered to them by the local ladies. THAMES V. AUCKLAND. The rep. match, Thames v.
