MR- GEORGE AND THE BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The director of technical education (Mr. George George) addressed the fol- ; lowing letter to the Board of Education this morning:— li With reference to the resolution passed by you at your last meeting, promising mc a bonus of £ 100 at the end of the present year if the Manual Training and Technical Education Department should be in credit at that time, in the interests of education in this district, I have to ask you to be good enough to rescind the said resolution at the earliest possible date, as under no circumstances could I agree to accept the principle involved. After the public utterances expressed by members of the Board on different occasions* in appreciation of mv work, and after all the time, thought, 'and energy that I have given to the pioneer movement in connection with manual training and technical education in this colony, it comes as a great-shock to mc to "find the Board meet my request for a salary somewhat in proportion to the responsibility of my position, and to the magnitude of the work done, by a decision which can only be interpreted by the public as a want-of-confidenee in my administration, and which, as far as I am aware, is unprecedented in the history of educational administration." The Chairman said that the matter had evidently been misinterpreted by Mr. George, and he thought that he should be informed that they saw no reason for alteiing their decision. After some further discussion it was agreed, 011 the motion of Mr. Stallworthy, to defer the matter until next meeting, -the same member also giving notice of moi*on that the previous resolution be rescinded.
