AUCKLAND'S SEDDON MEMORIAL.

The Education Board's circular letter regarding the proposed Technical Col lege memorial to the Premier was received by the Auckland Harbour Board to-day. The chairman said that no matter how willing the Board may be to contribute they were tied hand and foot by (an Act of Parliament, and it would be impossible to make a grant unless out of the amount that the Board was authorised to spend in any one year, £ 50. Ever since he had been a member of the Board that amount had been annually exceeded. The Regatta Committee always made a demand for half, and the small balance left had to cover all deficiencies, and there was no fund from which the Board was able to contribute. The Technical College was an institution in which he took a great interest, and lie was giving the project all the assistance in his power, but the Board could not contribute except by special Act, and he would therefore move that the letter be received. Mr J. K. Kneen said that the Board had recently granted £250 to the Christchurch Exhibition. The Technical College deserved the same support and sympathy from the Board, and if they could see their way clear to vote £250 for the Christchurch Exhibition, the Technical College should also receive support. The chairman pointed out that the £250 was voted under a special Act. Personally he would much rather see the £250 go to the Technical College than where it had gone, but the Board had no authority to vote a sum. Grants towards the Christchurch Exhibition were provided for from all local bodies by Act of Parliament, and assistance could only be voted to the Technical School by special Act. The letter was received. CARTERTON, Tuesday. At a public meeting last night it was decided to support a New Zealand national Seddon memorial, to be erected in Wellington, and that the Government be urged to set aside the Mount Cook site for a memorial technical college, to be free to students from all parts of the colony who possess the necessary qualifications. Mr Hornsby was appointed a delegate to the public meeting at Wellington on Wednesday night.
