EDUCATION BILL IN COMMITTEE.
LONDON. July 10. In committee of the House of Commons yesterday clause 8 of the Education Bill (payment of rents for use of endowed schools) was passed. Mr. Birrell accepted an amendment requiring the local authority to accept rents fixed by the Commissioners. ADELAIDE, July 10. The Primate of Australia (Dr. Saumarez Smith) has, returned from his visit to England. Interviewed with reference to the Education Bill, he said it was a matter of great rejoicing that there was such a strong desire in England for religious education in the schools. Secularism was nowhere, but there was a contest between people who wanted general Bible teaching, and those who wanted denominational teaching with a conscience clause. On the whole, he expressed the opinion that really good results would come from the amended bill. MOKE MASS MEETINGS. (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 10. Lord Hugh Cecil presided at a meeting in the Royal Albert Hall, South Kensington, of ten thousand Church of England laymen, convened for the purpose of protesting against the Education Bill. Other meetings continue to be held in the provinces.
