IMPORTANCE of DEFEAT

Military experts hold that the recent fighting in Manchuria -will prove of immense importance in the immediate future. It is pointed ont that the Japanese, by their seizure of important outpost positions on General Kniopatkin'a right flank, have rendered it necessary to alter the entire disposition of the Russian army. JAP REGIMENT DECIMATED. FURTHER RUSSIAN REPULSE. THANKS OF THE MIKADO. LONDON, February 2. The Mikado, through Field-Mar-shal Oyama, has thanked the troops for their victory over a superior force in the resent battle. Russian wounded to the number of 3590 have reached Mukden. Many of them are frostbitten. The correspondent of the Daily Mail at Tokio says that in the recent battle the Japanese took fifteen hundred prisoners, and captured much spoil. One Japanese regiment had 37 officers and 2500 men killed and wounded. General Kuropatkin reports that on Monday the Russian shells set Sre to Sa.-n.depu, the position recently captured by the Japanese. Tho Japanese delivered four attacks on his front on Monday, and all were repulsed, but the Russians finally retired.
