HEAVY MORTALITY ON THE __s- r (By Telegraph.—Press Association \ GISBORNE, Monday. Influenza is working'bavoc among the natives on the East Coast. Five deatta were reported last week, and the resulting tangis are likely to bring abont more. Tobungaism is also "said to be rife; but allegations that patients had been plunged into icy cold water were not sustained at the inquest:.. A verdict was returned .that, the-jdeaths were probably due to_ natural causes. All : that the Maori witnessescouli.be go to admit was that a Maori tohunga ordered the deceased natives to remove their boots when in the precincts of thel pa. They denied any other method of treat-,-, ment except prayer. The natives had been going about without boots, and submitting themselves to be.prayed over for fully a fortnight during the ' inclement weather, when the ground was cold and the surroundings of the pa in a very slushy state. The jury, in a rider, condemned the unhealthy conditions attending native gatherings. It is further reported that eight, other natives died at Waipu under similar erco_(Stances. , • ; 7
