The Pope gradually sank, and after a brief and painful struggle passed away in the presence of many of the Sacred
College.

When it became clear that the life of the Pope was to be measured by minutes rather than hy hours, it was decided to admit the diplomatic representatives accredited to the Vatican. His Holiness was still conscious, but extremely weak. It was with the utmost difficulty that he could articulate the Benediction, or raise his hands in blessing. All those present kissed.His Holiness' hand. Then came a few moments of agony, and soon afterwards His Holiness' breathing clearly diminished in strength, and at last ceased altogether. Dr. Mazzoni pronounced that life was extinct.

Dr. Mazzoni stated that the Pope might live for 24 hour 3, but that the end was possible at any moment. The Cardinals were hastily summoned to the Vatican at noon. j Cardinal Vannutelli administered ex -j treme unction to His Holiness. I
