BURGLARY AT KAIAPOI.

SENSATIONAL SAFE ROBBEJRY.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday

A sensational burglary occurred at' Kaiapoi Brewery on Saturday morning At three o'clock Mr Frank Hempleman, a clerk employed in the brewery, was knocked down by. a man'outside his-residence. The man took from his pocket the brewery office and safe keys. A little while afterwards Mr James Stevenson, brewer, living at the brewery, was awakened by his wife with the new-s that the house was full of smoke. He got up and discovered the office to be on fire. The safe door was opened, and the office door also. Stevenson secured the ledger and cashbook, and some of the keys taken from Hempleman's pocket were found in the brewery yard. Marks of buggy wheels were traced to the office door, and it was found that a sum of money had been taken from the safe, but the exact amount is not known. The detectives have proceeded from town to sift the matter. There was a smell of kerosene in the safe and parts of the office. The wmole affair is veiled in mystery, but evidently the thief or thieves were cognisant of the whereabouts of the safe. No banking had been done for several days.
