RELIEF OF SUFFERERS.

WELLINGTON, Saturday.

Messrs. Huddart, Parker and Co. have notified that they will contribute £500 to a fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Elingamite wreck. At the prohibition meetings in Auckland yesterday £13 10/ was collected and handed over to the treasurer of the relief fund, to which subscriptions are being made freely. Mr. Horace Stebbing- is endeavouring to arrange a sacred concert in aid of the relief fund for the Elingamite's survivors, in pursuanco of which he has written to a large number of professionals and local amateurs. It is hoped the Opera House will be secured for the occasion.

An extra military entertainment and exhibition in aid of the distressed survivors of the Elingamite was held in the Drill Hall on Saturday evening, and attracted a very large audience. The arrangements were carried out under the direction of Lieutenant-Colonel White. Mr. A. Kidd (Mayor) was present during- the evening. The raft was on exhibition, and attracted much attention.

Mr. Kneen, secretary of the Seamen's Union in Auckland, has received a cablegram from Mr. Sam Smith, M.L.A., and secretary of the Seamen's Union in Sydney, asking him to convey to the members of the Seamen's Union saved from the Elingamite, and to Captain Reid and Mr. Wetherilt, the congratulations of tr*e union on their safety. The cablegram also states that the Sydney Union will render what help is necessary to the survivors. Special services of thanksgiving for the survivors and intercession for those still missing were held at the various churches yesterday, and among the worshippers were survivors of the Elingamite.
