PUBLIC REFERENCES.

His Lordship the Eight Rev. Dr. Lenihan, speaking at St. Patrick's Cathedral yesterday morning, referred to the wreck of the Elingarnite. He said they must all join in thanking God for the happy deliverance of so many from an appalling fate, and to extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved. The sorrow of heart and mind endured by the shipwrecked people was beyond description, and he exhorted them to contribute as much as possible to the fund for the sufferers as they left the church. The Rev. Father Patterson also appealed to the people at the evening service. The sum of £19 was subscribed.

At the last meeting of fhe Council of the Auckland Provincial Christian Endeavour Union, on the motion of the Rev. J. T. Pinfold, seconded by Mr Swales, it was unanimously resolved: "That this council desires to express its sympathy with the sufferers through the wreck of the s.s. Eling-amite, and prays that the God of all consolation will comfort all that have been bereaved through the sad event."

WAIHI, this day. Mr E. Toorney, of Waihi, has received a telegram that John Dunn, father of P. Dunn, of this town, is among those lost in the Elingamite disaster. Pretty, who jumped overboard from the raft, is supposed to be J. Pretty, a well-known bushman here.
